Guest Editorial: Special Collection of Papers Arising From UComms16

The papers in this special issue were presented at the Underwater Communications and Networking conference held in Lerici, Italy, August 29–September 1, 2016 (UComms16). The conference series is focused on working toward an adequate physics-based understanding of the propagation of underwater communication signals and the performance of necessary higher level protocols with the objective of supporting the intelligent choice of standards, as a foundation for interoperability.
