Effect of home appliances on power quality of conventional grid

As the demand for power is increasing day by day and with more renewable sources injected to the grid, power quality is being affected not only because of the industrial loads but also by different home appliances operating in isolated and cumulative is a point of concern. In this paper, an experimental analysis on the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), Displacement Power Factor (DPF) and transient current of various devices is carried out in present Indian scenario. A multi-function meter MFMACE-357 is used for measurement of the parameters. From the experiments it is clear that some of the devices like CFLs which draw less power contribute to higher distortion of 32.11%. However it is observed that the combinational loads (excluding personal computers) have THD of 11.57%.
