A new approach to optimal location of single-transformer sub-transmission substations using GIS analysis

Due to the population growth and development of small industries and consequently rapid growth of electrical load and energy consumption in recent years, distribution systems have been facing new challenges and various goals such as responding to requests for power supply especially in scattered small industrial units, reducing losses, improving system reliability and decreasing non distributed energy, reducing operating costs, expansion of competitive markets etc. Considering such challenges ahead of distribution systems and thus an urgent need for efficient and economic network, it is necessary to develop distribution and sub-transmission networks. In this regard, performing a need assessment on establishment of sub-transmission power plants and locating them optimally could underlie reaching goals desired like voltage quality, reduction of losses and increasing system reliability as in some cases existing networks fail to meet current demands or the consumption level in near future so new stations and feeders must be located and constructed. In this paper, a targeted and innovative strategy based on GIS (Geographic Information System) and location-based analyses such as IDW, Density, etc are used to identify network vulnerabilities and centers of gravity of the load and then the final composition of the stations including number, location and the scope of service are determined so while meeting customers' needs all construction requirements will be regarded. With regard to the economic issues and the need for quick realization of the goal, reduction of losses in Tavanir Company, this study aimed to locate single-trans sub-transmission substations. The application of the proposed method is illustrated on Kermanshah Distribution Network.
