Installing, operating, and maintaining DC motors in a paper mill environment

When the paper industry was first "electrified", the only type of machine available that was capable of variable speed operation was powered by direct current. There were a number of knowledgeable manufacturers and users around who knew how the machines worked and how to take care of them. However, time passes. The control of these machines has changed over time from relatively simple analog systems to fairly complex digital systems, and those whose task it was to keep the machines healthy have since moved on to other things. The modern paper industry - although trending toward AC motors - still has several applications powered by DC equipment. The purpose of this paper is to present some of the accumulated knowledge base regarding installation and maintenance of these devices so that they may continue to perform as admirably as they have in the past. Contrary to popular belief - DC is NOT dead!
