A new probability-based multihop broadcast protocol for vehicular networks

The most important application of vehicular networks is the dissemination of safety information. Uncontrolled rebroadcasts result in redundant retransmission of the same information, excessive channel collisions, and exhausted network resources. Minimizing network redundancy and latency while still ensuring high reliability of the entire network is one of the main objectives of multi-hop broadcasting. It's a good choice to use probability-based multi-hop broadcast approach to solve the reliability and latency issues. In this paper, we propose a new probability-based multi-hop broadcast protocol. Different from the existing probability assignment schemes, it takes into account not only the local information but also the number of vehicles within one-hop range in the forwarding probability with a parameter λ that is the basis for the entire forwarding probability distribution. We can adjust the parameter to obtain a higher forwarding success probability. The main idea is that a higher forwarding probability is assigned to the nodes closer to the source node's transmission boundary. We calculate the network forwarding success probability, average number of copies and the average channel access delay. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been demonstrated by our extensive simulation results.
