Torsional Vibrations Mitigation in the Drivetrain of DFIG-Based Grid-Connected Wind Turbine

This paper presents a nonlinear technique based on the sliding mode control theory for mitigation of torsional vibrations in grid-connected doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbines. The presented method increases the lifespan of wind turbines by reducing torsional vibrations caused by mechanical or electrical disturbances. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is demonstrated on torsional vibrations caused by a voltage dip and a wind gust. In this paper, dynamics of the generator, multiinertia drivetrain, rotor- and grid-side converters, and transmission line are developed upon the 750-kW fatigue, aerodynamics, structures, and turbulence (FAST) simulator wind turbine model comprising wind turbine aerodynamics.
