Optimal Sizing of Battery Energy Storage and penetration degree of wind turbines using NSGA-II

Technological development on the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), leads to draw more attention from system operators, employing them in distribution power systems. It is known that although small BESS require less capital cost, it may not provide desired flexibility or mitigate intermittency of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) as expected, adversely, large BESS employment impose higher investment costs. Therefore, it should be an economic tradeoff between investment cost of BESS and operational benefits achieved by using them. On the other hand, due to environmental concerns, RESs especially wind turbines (WTs) are playing an important role in distribution systems in recent years. Improving the economic benefits of utility owner by optimum investment on the BESS which is integrated with small wind turbines in low voltage distribution networks is the main goal of this paper. This paper proposed new planning method for optimal sizing of BESS and optimal penetration of wind turbine in a distribution network in order to minimize total annual loss cost and minimizing cost of energy with scheduling the charge and discharge time of BESS which formulated as a multi objective optimization. Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) is used to solve the multi objective problem.
