Wireless residential power monitoring system

The world's non-renewable energy resources are depleting whilst the atmospheric carbon concentration is increasing. In order to arrest this, it has become mandatory that energy conservation measures be implemented. The Wireless Residential Power Monitoring System is a user-friendly package which monitors energy consumption within households with 100-240 V AC levels and assists with demand side management for the power utility. The design utilizes an Arduino Mega 2560 and an Official Arduino Wi-Fi shield which work together to capture and transmit data. Data capturing is further facilitated using hall effect current sensors coupled to a voltage transformer and the wirelessly captured data are stored on a MySQL database which allows users to view data through a Website dashboard. The capturing device does not require any user interaction once initialized and automatically recovers from errors. The website system supports multiple devices and users. The monitored devices are protected by a metal oxide varistor and relays. Two devices were tested over a two week period. The energy consumption of varying and constant loads that were logged matched closely to the actual consumption. This system can be coupled with any energy management system to quantify energy savings and promote conservative energy practices amongst users.
