Importance of considering induction motor load for studying impact of photovoltaic generation on transient stability of power systems

In this study, we investigate the importance of modeling induction motor (IM) loads for studying the impact of photovoltaic power generation (PV) systems on the transient stability of power systems. First, the impact of modeling the IM load is investigated for a one-machine infinite-bus system. In a numerical example, the load is modeled by a static load or composite load that includes the IM. We evaluate the impact of the fault ride-through (FRT) capability of the PV system on the transient stability under each load condition using the equal area criterion. The impact of modeling the IM load is then investigated for a multi-machine power system by changing the ratio of the IM load to the total load. The numerical examples show that the advanced FRT capability of the PV system after a voltage sag has both desirable and undesirable effects on the transient stability, depending on the load condition.
