Early Termination of Turbo Decoding by Identification of Undecodable Blocks

In pursuing of optimizing the performance of the Turbo decoding, early stopping (ES) rules are deployed to reduce decoding latency and save resources. The aim of these rules is the reduction of the average number of iterations at a tolerable performance degradation. In this paper, a rule is proposed to detect undecodable blocks especially at low-mid SNRs. This method can be incorporated with any other early terminating method that works with the converging blocks only. The method is optimized to achieve the best iteration saving with negligible BER degradation.
