EM design and performance analysis of planar metamaterial-based RAS

Metamaterial, an engineered material has peculiar electromagnetic (EM) propagation characteristics. This feature may be exploited in reducing the EM scattering. In this paper, novel EM design and performance analysis of metamaterial-based radar absorbing structure (RAS) is presented. Two different configurations, viz. uniform and non-uniform short strip pair (SSP) are discussed. The effective material parameters of the structures are extracted using improved Chen's method. The effective permittivity of the designed absorber is shown to be very close to zero (ENZ) in the frequency range 9-11 GHz. Such ENZ absorber has application in low observability.
