A utility initiative based method for demand side management and loss reduction in a radial distribution network containing voltage regulated loads

The world wide effort for developing more efficient and economic viable operating scenario in distribution system has led to the development of the concept of demand side management. Conservation voltage reduction (CVR) is a very promising technique for this purpose. Together with the optimal capacitor placement (OCP), it can lead to a significant demand reduction at different load buses. In this paper, an optimal method for demand side management and loss reduction in a radial distribution network has been proposed. Demand side management is based on the regulation of the power consumption by different voltage regulated loads by regulating the supply voltage. IEEE 33 bus test system has been used to verify the proposed method by the use of ETAP. Simulation results prove that the proposed method ensures huge load reduction at consumer end, reduction in distribution losses, and a significant release in system capacity, Beside this the proposed technique also addresses voltage stability, improves power factor and extends appliances life. An economic analysis shows a huge financial gain by a utility adopting the proposed method.
