Abstract:
In order to meet the ever increasing electricity demand along with reduced environmental pollution, renewable energy resources are in extensive use. However intermittent behavior of renewable energy can result in a number of operational challenges including frequency fluctuation in microgrid. Energy storage devices have been found useful to reduce this frequency fluctuation. This paper investigates the effect of battery energy storage system (BESS) on post-fault frequency condition of islanded system. The studies compare the placements of BESS at different locations of the grid including point of common coupling, the bus with maximum load and the bus with minimum load. Results show that BESS reduces the post fault frequency fluctuations in the quickest and most effective manner at the point of common coupling.
