Performance analysis of bidirectional split-Pi converter integrated with passive ripple cancelling circuit

Present electronic systems desire high quality, small, lightweight, reliable, and efficient power supplies. Split-Pi converter has an immense potential due to its exclusive features of bidirectional property, option to employ in multiphase systems and smaller ratings of passive elements for applications requiring high power density. Furthermore, this regulator can achieve high energy conversion efficiency and can operate at high switching frequencies, which naturally generate current ripples. Redundant ripples cause significant impact on the output power. Contribution of this paper is to incorporate passive ripple cancelling circuit (PRCC) with dynamic model of Split-Pi converter to investigate the performance of this ripple cancelling approach for the buck-boost operation of the studied converter. Furthermore, it is found that resulting peak to peak input current ripple is reduced and ripple cancelling ratio is above 92%. Research is done on the basis of steady state analysis and simulation results are produced using MATLAB/SIMULINK tool.
