Planar monopole antenna with triple-band operation for LTE/WLAN MIMO system

A novel triple-band design of planar MIMO monopole antenna for LTE/WLAN system is proposed. With the use of inverted S- and L-shaped monopole strips accompanying the antenna, multi-resonant modes close to 2.5/3.5/5.5 GHz bands are excited to meet the specifications of LTE /WLAN system. The obtained impedance bandwidth across the operating bands can reach about 1460/848 MHz for the 2.5/3.5/5.5 GHz bands, respectively. Our model can develop the compact operation with more than 15 % antenna size reduction for suitably embedding into the portable devices as overall antenna dimension is only set to 20 × 15 mm². The measured peak gains and radiation efficiencies are about 3.1/4.0/4.4 dBi and 84/75/82 % for the 2.5/3.5/5.5 GHz band, respectively, with nearly omni-directional pattern in the XY-plane.
