The performance comparison between fast decoupled and backward-forward sweep in solving distribution systems

This paper presents comparison between fast decoupled and backward-forward sweep load flow methods in solving distribution systems. Distribution systems have features such as high R/X lines, combined single/two/three phase lines, unbalance and delta-connected loads and regulators that have been challenging the application of fast decoupled method. Using axis rotation, fast decoupled method used to converge equally good for high R/X networks as low ones and also solve load flow in distribution systems. On the other hand, backward-forward sweep method has been improved using new data structure. In this paper, we present the performance between axis rotations fast decoupled and backward-forward sweep methods. The methods are tested in 37 and 123 node IEEE radial distribution systems. Comparison of performance shows that both methods equally good.
