Step approach for Finite Element modeling of Ultrasound transducer

Ultrasound transducer convert sound pressure waves to electrical signals or vice versa. Ultrasound transducers are applicable in industrial measurements and biomedical imaging. The optimization of ultrasound transducers has traditionally been done through trial and error, somewhat guided by one-dimensional simulations. This can often be a very time consuming and expensive process; hence a more extensive simulation method is desired. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or Finite Element Method(FEM) reduce the number of prototypes and experiments that have to be run when designing, optimizing, a device. In this paper, steps for simulation of ultrasound transducer using FEM are discussed. Depending upon application physical dimensions and frequency ranges of ultrasound transducer varies, this simulation is helpful for selection of better physical properties and frequency range for specific application. This can be done by examining performance parameters like far field pressure and directivity. This study is helpful for new projects development and performance simulations of Ultrasound transducer.
