Ship propulsion strategies by using wind energy

Ship propulsion covers the 90 percentage of global goods trade. It consumes almost 250 to 325 million tonnes of fuel i.e. heavy oil and diesel per annum. Due to this it produces 2.8 to 3 percent of overall anthropogenic greenhouse gases emission mainly, CO₂ emission. To reduce this pollution and making ship transport sustainable beyond fossil fuel era, researchers have suggested partial/ full use of wind energy for ship transportation. They have suggested five different strategies which appears to be more promising. In this paper major developments that took place in these five strategies of wind energy application for ship propulsion has been reviewed. This review is in chronological manner corresponding to each of the strategies.
