Performance limitations of optical transmission system due to the combined effects of chirping, GVD and SPM

Due to the technological enhancement of fiber-optic communication, for large data rate, intense optical power, increasing link length and diverse channel in the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), the simultaneous effect of chirping, group velocity dispersion (GVD) and self-phase modulation (SPM) should take into account in the optical transmission system. SPM introduces nonlinear refractive index that depends on intensity and GVD results for the refractive index that relies on wavelength. Both SPM and GVD impose limitations on the propagating optical pulse when chirped Gaussian pulse transmits into the fiber. To investigate the simultaneous effect of SPM and GVD with chirping, numerical analysis and simulation is carried out by split step Fourier method based on nonlinear Schrodinger equation in 3-D environment using different fibers. Results show that large effective area fiber (LEAF) gives better performance than standard single mode fiber (SSMF) or nonzero dispersion shifted fiber (NZDSF) for same bit rate, power, link length and chirping factor.
