Computational validation of hydrodynamic and hydroacoustic performance of marine propeller

Numerical study is carried out to assess the hydro dynamic and hydro-acoustic performance of a moving marine propeller INSEAN E779A. However, a 2D aeroacoustics problem of 2D cylinder which is being used worldwide for benchmarking has been used to verify our methodology of analysis. Results for vortex shedding and sound pressure level are compared and found coherent with the published numerical and experimental data. For marine propeller under non cavitating open water characteristic flow, turbulence model based on k-ε standard wall function is applied. Validation of results is performed by comparing thrust and torque coefficient with experimental values from literature and a good conformity is noticed in this regard. Furthermore, Ffowcs William and Hawking analogy has been used to perform hydro acoustic analysis to transform numerically computed pressure fluctuations at near and far field receiver positions through fast fourier transformation into SPL. SPL parameter is used as it gives a better understanding of the hydro-dynamically generated noise. Given thought to judge the performance of propeller at different operating conditions, angle of attack for the incident fluid is altered and hence interesting feature with respect to hydro-dynamic specifications of propeller, have been observed and highlighted.
