Trip planning for electric vehicle through optimal driving using genetic algorithm

Due to limited charging capacity of battery, optimal driving of an electric vehicle is important to utilize the available charge in an efficient manner to complete the entire route. In this respect, a novel system for trip planning of electric vehicle is presented here through adopting an optimal driving strategy (ODS). The ODS was determined by solving an associated multi-objective optimization problem using a genetic algorithm. The optimization problem deals with three conflicting objectives, minimizing trip time while minimizing energy consumption and maximizing comfort. The proposed system presents a set of optimal driving strategy (ODS) to the driver along with the corresponding range, trip end battery state-of-charge, and trip time to select a best one to perform the journey. It was observed that use of ODS not only saves energy but also provides guidance to ameliorate various EV-related drawbacks.
