Design of a two-factor authentication ticketing system for transit applications

As the Smart card technology continues to evolve, new and imaginative ideas for smart card applications are swiftly becoming a reality. Security is always a big concern for smart cards applications. This naturally gives rise to the need for reliable, efficient cryptographic algorithms. In this paper, we have proposed a two-factor authentication ticketing system for transit applications. In this method, the PIN stored in the smart card is used as the first factor of authentication and the OTP sent to the user device acts as the second factor of authentication. We have used modified SHA-256 algorithm for the generation of OTP to enhance the security and the PIN verification is done in the user device while waiting in the queue thus saving time.
