Strategical studies on frequency and voltage control of an islanded microgrid

With their ability to integrate many distributed power generating units, microgrids are widely used in the current power industry. The idea of controlling smaller subsystems in islanded mode have been a focus of research and has been receiving a vast amount of attention. However, under islanded operation, there is a need for a control system to control the supply and demand and to maintain its stability. Therefore, there is a need to design and simulate several scenarios of microgrids. This paper focuses on implementing a control system to balance supply and demand of a microgrid in MATLAB/Simulink. A microgrid consisting of two synchronous generators, a dynamic load and three fixed loads has been developed and simulated for different scenarios. The designed control system was used to control frequency and voltage changes in the microgrid due to changes in demand. The objective of the controller is to stabilize both frequency and voltage during any fluctuation in demand. This paper also simulates and discusses the possibility of load shedding techniques for controlling the frequency of the microgids.
