Discussion on measured impulse sparkover voltage of Gas Discharge Tubes (GDT)

Gas Discharge Tubes (GDT) are the most popular equipment to use for applications in protection circuits of exchange equipment, telecommunication lines, subscriber, signaling networks or customer equipment from surges. The IEC standard specified two methods for measured impulse sparkover voltage rate of rise of 1 kV/μs in two standards. This paper is comparison between the test results that measured impulse sparkover voltage rate of rise of 1 kV/μs for test by impulse voltage generator and 10/1000 μs waveform impulse current generator. Upon this comparison, the author would like to propose the Technical Committee to review and revise to select one test method for measured impulse sparkover voltage rate of rise of 1 kV/μs of GDT.
