Lightning location with linet in Europe

Starting some 10 years ago the `Sferics Research' group at the Physics Department of the University of Munich developed methods for lightning location based on the latest available technologies. Nowcast GmbH, an off-spring of this project, installed in 2006 the new system LINET in Europe and begun full operation. The network uses the VLF/LF band and attains high efficiency for ground strokes; cloud lightning is also reported and identified, provided that the sensor baselines do not exceed some 200-250 km. Due to highly optimized hardware and software techniques a locating accuracy of ~100 m becomes feasible, verified by comparison with strikes into towers.
