Black routing and node obscuring in IoT

We present Black Routing and Node Obscuring for the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT networks are resource-constrained and susceptible to a range of attacks. The primary security mechanisms used to mitigate attacks include payload encryption, anonymous routing, source and destination obfuscation. IoT Black networks mitigate communication-based attacks by encrypting all data and meta-data contained within a frame or packet. Black routing mitigates the routing challenges with encrypted meta-data, and traffic analysis attacks. We obscure the source via a token-based routing approach, and we obscure the destination by forwarding the packet beyond the final destination. Analysis of Black routing shows increased messaging and compute proportional to the number of nodes in the path, with payload efficiency significantly higher than existing IoT protocols. To obscure source-destination pairs, a minimum of 40% of the total IoT nodes in the path is needed.
