Design and development of ultrawideband hybrid T-shaped dielectric resonator antenna

In this paper, a novel dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) design for ultrawideband (UWB) applications is proposed. A hybrid T-shaped DRA is excited by a conformal trapezoidal shaped patch feeding mechanism. It is observed that by introduction of air gap and use of two different DRA materials, Q-factor can be reduced and in turn UWB can be achieved. A rigorous parametric study of the proposed antenna is carried out to optimize its bandwidth while maintaining its compactness. The measured results are found in close agreement with simulated results with an overall impedance bandwidth of about 110.5% (-10 dB reference), covering frequency range from 3.35-11.6 GHz. Results of the proposed antenna and parametric study of various parameters are discussed.
