A wavelet-based event detection and location framework for enhanced situational awareness in power system

This paper presents a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) based approach for real-time event detection and location. Four important classes of events; namely, generator outage, 3-phase fault, load rejection, and capacitor outage, are studied. A generalized method is incorporated for selection of mother wavelet and decomposition level. The major contribution of the proposed work is the development of a new index based on the energy of wavelet detail coefficients of voltage and frequency signals for real-time detection of events. Wavelet energy is also exploited to locate event within narrow geographical boundaries. The proposed work is tested on the standard New England-39 bus test system.
