On the detection probability of external threats with the main pipelines physical protection systems

There are two types of external threats to the security of the pipeline: the theft of the pumped product and destruction resulting from acts of sabotage. Despite the considerable efforts made to counter these threats, the question of their neutralization is still on the agenda. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the approach for the definition of the desired probability values of unauthorized attempts detection to contact the pipe shell to maintain a minimum level of losses for the pipeline's protection to assess the trend of change in the short term and using this information to propose the structure of pipeline's physical protection system to neutralize terrorist attacks. It was concluded that it's needed to develop a muli-sensor system, minimum equipment of which has to consist of interrelated seismic and vibro-acoustic subsystems.
