Performance analysis of combined guard channel and Mobile assisted handoff call admission

Performance analysis of the combined guard channels and Mobile assisted (M+G) handoff call admission control for two customer types is performed. A wireless cell which serves two types of calls; n-type (narrowband) and w-type (wideband) is considered. The total numbers of channels in the cell are divided into common and reserve channels. Originating calls are only served from the common channels, while handoff calls, which have an acceptable signal level, can be served from the common or reserved channels. The two-dimensional state diagram of the system is developed and the state equations are solved using algorithmic matrix techniques. The results indicate that the blocking probability of the originating calls of both types is less than the case of the pure guard channels strategy. The probability of handoff call dropping is also lower. At the same time, average channel utilization is slightly decreased.
