Electromagnetic transients in a 1000 kV system: Part III — fault inception, clearing and load rejection

At present, very few Ultra High Voltage transmission projects (1000 kV or above) were constructed in the world. From these projects, China has some projects operating at this voltage level showing reportedly a satisfactory performance. The rest of the UHV (Ultra High Voltage) projects, although designed for such voltage level, are operating at lower voltages. This paper aims at reporting the main results of the electromagnetic transients related to fault inception and its clearing, as well as the load rejection phenomenon of a 1000 kV line proposed to be constructed in Brazil. Subsequently, the duties of the surge arresters are examined. The present project, to the authors' best awareness is the first of its kind in Latin America; thus, its outcome may be useful for future similar projects.
