Capacity evaluation of the UTRA FDD and TDD modes

The radio interface for the European third generation mobile system (UMTS, Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), called UTRA (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access), proposes a FDD mode which draws on W-CDMA technology and a TDD mode which draws on TD-CDMA technology. This paper presents some capacity simulation results for both FDD and TDD UTRA modes carried out on a simulation platform (radio mobile network simulation tool) developed at France Telecom CNET. For each of the UTRA modes, different test environments and deployment scenarios have been simulated consistent with modeling assumptions used during the evaluation process followed both by the European Telecommunication Standard Institute (ETSI) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The way the main radio control functions of each mode have been modeled is briefly described, Capacity results are presented for circuit-switched services such as speech (50% voice activity factor) or long constrained delay data (100% activity factor).
