On sound source localization with a 3D Ambisonic Monopulse SONAR

Coincident microphone array techniques are usually employed in 3-dimensional (3D) audio entertainment applications, like cinema sound, music, video games, but in other scenarios, like target localization, air and underwater warfare (where acoustics and hydrophones promptly support radio systems) their usage was investigated far too little. In RADAR theory, the Monopulse RADAR provides a robust and easy solution in source localization. In this paper, we propose an acoustic source localization system based on the same principle of Monopulse. Our system works in 3D, since its microphone configuration is the Ambisonic B-Format. We present the advantages and the points to be fixed in future implementations. The analysis of the current capabilities of our Ambisonic Monopulse is supported by simulations.
