Direct current anomaly due to a wedge in conducting ground

In the present paper a geoelectric dc problem involving a wedge-shaped structure in a conducting ground medium is studied. The geometry is a generalization for the well-known dipping layer problem in geophysics. In mathematical terms the three-dimensional Poisson equation is solved in a geometry where a point current excitation is located at the interface of the air and the ground. The latter medium is assumed to be homogeneous except for an arbitrarily tilted wedge-shaped structure whose edge coincides with the Earth's surface. The potential anomaly due to this wedge is solved at the surface of the ground in terms of an image line current source which is located in complex space. The image representation of the wedge anomaly provides an analytical tool to simulate the response of the ground structure for arbitrary current excitations at the surface. Furthermore, the potential due to the image and the original point source represents the Green's function of the geometry in question, which can be applied to numerical studies of more general problems involving a wedge-shaped anomaly in the ground model.
