LS-UPQC for simultaneous voltage and current compensation

One of the most popular issues in the power distribution is the quality improvement due to the increased usage of power electronic based loads. This paper analyse the performance of Unified Power Quality Conditioner which is the combination of Series Active Power Filter (SAPF) and Shunt/Parallel Active Power Filter (PAPF) sharing a common DC bus capacitor. A Left Shunt UPQC (LS-UPQC) configuration of UPQC with a Combined Mode Control (CMC) when connected to a distribution system to protect sensitive loads against power quality tribulations under Non-Sinusoidal supply condition is used in this paper. Sinusoidal PWM current controller(SPWM), hysteresis current controller (HCC)are used for the generation of switching pulses to series and parallel Active power Filters (APF). This control is achieved without using any transformation for generating the reference voltages/currents and thus avoiding complex computations for implementation. The two control algorithm is simulated by use of PSCAD/EMTDC to validate the performance of LS-UPQC with combined mode control to mitigate various power quality issues.
