Investigation on handoff performance using MDP in heterogeneous wireless networks

The Handoff schemes should be seamless, only then can better service be provided. Hence for improved scheme we design a feasible handoff scheme for wireless heterogeneous networks. In the proposed handover method, a Vertical Handoff Manager (VHOM) is designed to control the handoff process based on the Markov Decision Process (MDP) in wide area network. In the proposed method STAs will choose the AP based on the RSSI of the AP, bandwidth, velocity of the node movement and Link Expiry Time (LET) of WLAN's (Both Uplink and Downlink). Then the handoff performance is evaluated by comparing the delay and throughput for the existing and proposed schemes. The proposed results show that the handoff method significantly reduces the delay and increases throughput eliminating packet drop during handoff. As a result, both the fixed point station and the mobile point stations within overlapped regions can benefit from VHOs avoiding unwanted handoffs.
