Innovation to brisbane city council street lighting system with solar powered LED: A techno-economic feasibility study

Brisbane City Council is doing business in a more sustainable manner and providing opportunities for residents, business and not-for-profit organizations to reduce their carbon footprint. This paper describes a project supported by The University of Queensland, Brisbane City Council and Energex, to determine the feasibility of replacing traditional street lights with newly advanced technology of solar powered LED lights. Firstly, the ten potential LED products provided by lighting suppliers were analyzed and compared with the current technologies. Secondly, a Net Present Value (NPV) analysis was conducted on all the lamp technologies available. Lastly, current literature on the integration of solar PV technology with street lighting system was reviewed and summarized.
