Powering software defined networks with an any rack capable power bus

Software Defined Networks are characterized by disaggregation of hardware, specifically large monolithic equipment containing all functions is replaced by smaller equipment whose functions can be dynamically allocated as needed by the network. Disaggregation presents powering problems that are different from traditional telecom powering of larger discretely wired loads. One problem is reliably and efficiently feeding power to each of 42 distinct pieces of equipment in a single cabinet or rack. When exploring nontraditional telecom approaches to powering 1U or 2U equipment, one finds the legacy industry standard 42 AC fed silver boxes per rack approach, and a more energy efficient, easier to wire, Open Compute 12V DC fed approach. Smaller customers have not been able to embrace Open Compute for reasons of function availability, supplier leverage, and physical fit. Most cabinet integrators continue to use AC fed 19-inch EIA racks with compromised energy efficiency and crowded wiring spaces, principally because these allow them to deliver solutions using product that is available. The disaggregation problem is best addressed by a different physical architecture. This paper presents an architecture that supports +48V (or +12V) bussing up and down the rack in a way that is compatible with EIA standard 19-inch equipment and will work in most four post racks. This approach effectively builds a bridge between legacy AC fed equipment that is generally available, and high efficiency DC powered equipment. It does not force a flash cut to obtain the significant efficiencies of DC power.
