Harmonic reduction, power factor improvement and speed detection for 3-phase induction motor drive system

Conventional Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) method for induction motor consists of nonlinear loads such as rectifier and inverter (AC-DC-AC). These nonlinear devices are the biggest cause of harmonics generation on power lines. In proposed system, passive LC filters are used to control the harmonic currents present on power lines. DSP-based variable frequency drive is designed using DSP TMS320LF2407A offers an advantage of high speed operation. This paper represents Harmonic Reduction and Power Factor Improvement technique for 3-phase Induction Motor drive system using passive LC components. Sensorless speed detection is achieved based on the analysis of blocked voltage across the non-conducting thyristors. Experimental results are taken in laboratory using 3-phase, 1Hp, 1500rpm Induction Motor. Proposed system for Harmonic Reduction is also simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK power system toolbox.
