Depth and breadth of educational data mining: Researchers' point of view

Education has impact on social, economical and cultural aspects of societies. Education is placed at the base of human race development by various planners of society. Educational data mining is an emerging field for knowledge discovering from large amount of educational data. Across the world from different countries researchers are putting in their efforts in finding out patterns and factors that can be helpful in betterment of education. This paper surveys research of all different kinds of educations' institutions present in developed and developing countries. It covers various kinds of data available around the world for the said purpose and methodology used for collecting and cleaning them before applying data mining techniques. It also gives the glimpse of feature selection techniques. Heterogeneous set of data mining techniques are available for the educational data mining and used by distinct scholars. Performance measured by them can help us in deciding applicability of a particular method to a specific kind of data. This will help those scholars who are determined to make their valuable contribution in the field of educational data mining.
