Handover algorithm for heterogeneous networks

Large number of wireless technologies lead to heterogeneity of the access environment. Mobility Management is an important issue for such networks. Vertical handover decision is an important component of the heterogeneous networks. In a cellular network, coverage, especially indoors is the main issues. Femtocells have proved to be a promising solution by improving coverage and the Quality of Service to users on one hand and by offloading the macrocells on the other hand. This paper presents the previous works on the handover management between macrocells and overlaid femtocells. The Received Signal Strength(RSS) is the most important criterion for performing handover. A new handover algorithm based on RSS is proposed. The proposed algorithm is expected to reduce the number of unnecessary handovers, reduce ping pong effect thus provide improved Quality of Service to user.
