This paper provides study of popular radio frequency based wireless communication standards, their main features, advantages, disadvantages and applications. It further lists down the drawbacks of using radio frequency spectrum and the need to navigate to the wireless optical band. The paper aims to provide the overview of optical wireless communication, its advantages, frequency bands, and transmitter and receiver modules and the eye safety standards. Finally the paper lists some of the open areas of research in the field of wireless optical communication.
