ISDN goes international

This paper addresses the extension of ISDN services internationally. It begins with the historic background and events that led to the agreements within Europe (and elsewhere) to define the necessary common standards to support an international ISDM. Thepaper considers in detail one of the network elements that is required to reallre the ISDN, the International Gateway, and discusses the major issues that British Telecom encountered in implementing the network. Thepaper also describes some of the technical challenges addressed by the switch manufacturer during the implementation of the standards on British Telecom's first ISM gateway.
