Data services and lans interconnection using atm technique

High speed data communications over more and more ex tended areas and interconnection of LANs, are a growing need to sad@&. Today, data "Wer are limited to less than 2 MN& and interconnection problems are solved with filtering bridges; butinthefuture, newgencrationsofHS@LANsanddevelopment ofMAtYs will be necessary. In addition to the data requirements, these networks willhave toprovidefor isochronousservicessuch as voice and moving pictures; moreover they will have to inter work with the future B ISDN. The aim ofthispaper is to focus on ATM based solutionsfirst to solve these problems and second to design a new generation of integrated LANs. As a matter offac4 we think that ATM is an efficient technique for high speed data communications and interconnection, moreover it will simplify the interconnecting proble?nswithanATMpubficnetwork(accordingtoLI21 CCTrT recommendations, ATM is the target transfer mode solution for the future BjSDN). The first part of this paper points out the growing need for high speed data transfer andfor LANs interconnection. Then, the main features ofATM are recalled and the i"wet of this tech nique on data transfer is highlighted. The third part describes solutions to handle connectionless mode in an ATM network, the two following pans are devoted to interconnection solutions in public and private networks. An ATM based private network experimen4 using these concepts and in progress at CNET, is described.
