Elasticity measurement of frozen silt by immersion ultrasonic sing-around method

Using the immersion ultrasonic sing-around method, the elasticity of frozen tire-mixed silt was investigated for different tire mixing ratios. Ultrasonic propagation velocities of both compressive and shear waves through frozen tire-mixed silt were measured under temperature condition of near sub zero. Based upon the elastic wave propagation theory, the elastic constants of frozen silt were determined as a function of temperature. The results indicated that both Young's modulus and rigidity of frozen silt decreased, Poisson's ratio considerably increased as the temperature rose to near sub zero, which was considered to be caused by the change in unfrozen water amount of frozen silt, and that higher tire mixing ratio led to decreases of both dilatational and shear waves, Young's modulus and rigidity.
