Research and Development for Logistics Support

Throughout the Department of Defense there is increased recognition of the need for research and development in logistics support. In the past, too much emphasis has been placed upon R&D for improved system performance and too little on improved system support. Four Independent Research and Development (IR&D) projects in widely different areas of support are described: Printed Circuit Board Test Signal Extraction an electro-optical technique for handling test signals at speeds from d.c. to greater than 320 MHz. Contactless Testing by Analysis of Electro magnetic Radiation - radiated "signatures" of operating integrated circuits are analyzed to detect faults. Portable Remote Maintenance Enhancement System (PRMES) - field maintenance terminals incorporating video display with touch panel; keyboard; high density, non-volatile memory; microprocessor controller and an RF transmitter/ receiver. Illustration Comprehensibility Index - auto mated, objective techniques for assessing complexity of illustrations in technical manuals.
