Supply quality issues at the interface between power system and industrial consumers

First, general concepts are defined, such as power quality (PQ) electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), etc. Some basic concepts used in standards or recommendations are then explained: compatibility level; voltage characteristic; planning level. Quality and reliability indices are further defined and numerical values for them are summarized as they appear in the latest IEC and CENELEC documents. Some thoughts are finally given about possible new product and service offerings for consumers. Possibilities appear for sensitive or disturbing loads. Consumers using sensitive loads may need a supply of better than average quality, rather than worrying about power conditioning equipment. Consumers using disturbing loads may need additional ancillary services, rather than worrying about compensating equipment. New technologies become mature for the emergence of nonconventional, network-side solutions (custom power), but the future deregulated environment brings uncertainties about their implementation.
