Forest Product Company Selects IEEE Std. 841 Motors

For many years now, the author has been involved in writing specifications for motors for both maintenance and major capital projects. There was not a consistent specification throughout our company for purchasing new motors. Based on past experience at existing mills, motor specifications were written for a new green field mill and included features wanted/needed that were not available on motors usually provided. After the mill was built, additional motors might be required which would match these same initial specifications. However, it became obvious that the manufacturer did not build that motor on a day to day basis. It would require a special “production run" at much higher prices than paid for the initial motors and with much longer delivery time than for standard motors. Motor maintenance repair costs for those special motors were high. Also, it was clearly time to look at company energy costs and the total cost of motor ownership.
