The study on optical interconnection and assembly technology based on long-rang surface plasmon polaritons grating

Development of future photonic integrated circuits has increased the demand for the miniaturization of photonic components. Optical interconnect technology has a few inherent advantages over traditional discrete devices, such as low power consumption. However, the technology has many problems to be solved, such as low coupling efficiency and low reliability. Furthermore, it hasn't been feasible roadmap of technology in the light source yet. Currently, the different mode area of devices is the main cause of low coupling efficiency. The main purpose of this paper improve the coupling efficiency between the grating and the semiconductor laser, and improve reliability of the system. In order to improve the coupling efficiency, we propose a new long-range surface plasmon polaritons(LRSPPs) grating structure that has two different area cross sections, and optimize the grating structure by the finite element method(FEM). In addition, we investigate the properties of the assembly structure based on semiconductor laser, LRSPPs grating structure, and LRSPPs waveguide, using the finite element method in COMSOL™. The optimal results show that the coupling efficiency can achieve than 90% by optimizing the grating structure, and significantly improve reliability of the assembly structure.
