Multipath routing with load balancing and admission control in Software-Defined Networking (SDN)

Ethernet has a limitation in routing scheme where Ethernet only uses single path routing scheme like Spanning Tree Protocol (STP). In this case, it cannot achieve high throughput and provide high network latency because STP only uses one path. Therefore, we need a routing scheme that can maximize network throughput and minimize network latency. One of solution for this issue is multipath routing scheme, because this scheme uses multiple path that available in the network to forward the traffic. In this case, load balancing has a role to balance the network traffic through on each path. Further, admission control has an important role to control the amount of traffic that injected into the network, so congestion can be avoided. In this paper, we propose a system multipath routing with load balancing and admission control in Software-Defined Networking (SDN), where SDN is the emerging network paradigm that separate control plane and forwarding plane, and we use Ryu as a controller. We simulate our multipath routing with load balancing and admission control in Mininet simulator and measure the performance of it, in terms of latency, packet loss and throughput, which show that our system outperform STP and multipath routing with load balancing only, in terms of increased throughput and reduced latency.
